African finches are hardy little birds with a personality of their own. When mating they may take over larger species of birds nest; it seems they just do not realize their own size. Finches are wonderful and petite birds that are easy to care for and to love.
These beautiful birds can be kept inside as pets. They are so remarkably well-behaved and will breed if that is what is intended as long as a suitable mate is found. Their diets need to be well-rounded which should include an ample amount of clean water. This and more will be discussed in this article.
These unique finches make wonderful pets and will brighten any dull day with song and movement. They do like their privacy but seem to become more attached to their caretakers than realized. Recently an older gentleman who had African finches as pets had to be put into a nursing home. His son remained living at the household with the birds. The son took care of the birds but within about a week the birds were not acting the same. They were not singing and their appetites dropped down. The son did everything that the father was doing but nothing helped. Finally when the son noticed that these small birds were beginning to pull out their feathers did he resort to getting advice. The birds were stressed over the change in caretakers. It seems that once they are attached to a caretaker they may not take to being cared for by others.
African finches have been said to be hard to breed while in captivity. This is not the case when the experts are questioned. In many cases it is just that the right mate has not been chosen or there is too much activity around the cage. By trying a few different things the mating will eventually take place.
When choosing a breeding box for them you will have to decide whether to use the wooden or a wicker one. Although the wicker ones work well they are harder to keep clean and do not open at the top. The wooden breeder boxes for the African finches open at the top so that the breeder can keep an eye on what is going on inside. This is necessary in case some of the eggs are not fertile or a hatchling dies. These will need to be removed for the health of the other chicks.
When nesting, they like the nests to be placed on the lower section of the cages. The fun thing to watch is that many times the male will also build a nest for him on the top of the breeder box if it is set inside of the cage. Obviously those that are on the outside of the cages are not accessible to the male. While the female works on the inside he is busy building and showing off his nest.
Another fun thing to note with the mating of African finches is the male when he is doing his mating dance. Not only does he sing but also he does the singing with a long piece of grass in his mouth. It is quite entertaining to watch. These adorable birds will bring much joy to the novice and the expert of birds alike.
