It always fascinating for young guys in their twenties to see protests and participate in them. That is the time, when we have the adrenaline flowing at the highest speed in our veins. This is the time, when we have the courage, guts and beliefs that YES, WE CAN. This is the time, when we think, we can change anything in this world, be it agenda of the WTO or G 8 or the way Chinese are creating space for making the huge Bird Nest for the Olympics. This is the time, when we have the courage to die for the philosophy. Most of the suicide bombers are in this age group only. As Churchill said about the young guys in RAF "Never was so much owed by so many to so few", when young guys sacrificed themselves in the battle of Britain to stop the once unconquerable lufftwaffe. This is the age group where people make their future and have the potential to make the future of their country.
Or, is it really?
How many revolutionaries we know, who made any impact in their twenties. Well, Bhagat Singh died at 23 and yes, he made a lot of impact on the society. But such examples are very rare. The truth is, people in this young age, have the ferocity to drive things. But, they need someone to tell them, what has to be driven. That is why, masses need leaders. And leaders require time to gain such experience so that they can drive people with ultimate courage towards a common goal.
We all are witnessing, for the past couple of months, the shameful example of Indian politicians being exposed of one scam or another. I mean, our politicians had made money out of what not. Be it Commonwealth games or telecom spectrum or anything under the Sun. Corruption is not something new for Indian politics. In fact it is not new for world politics. The word lobbying was originated from the act of few businessmen, who used to meet US lawmakers in hotel lobby and "persuade" them to make business friendly decisions.
In India, life and corruption are just intertwined. How many of us have actually not paid after being caught violating traffic signal. But we overlook such incidents, or may be we just start taking as it is, and accept it as fine.
But one fine day, something dramatic happens.
One old but very energetic social activist says, "Enough is enough". He announces that he will sit on a fast unto death to shake this government who is not doing anything to stop the evolving monster of corruption in this country. And suddenly everything changes.
800 out of my 850 friends on Facebook have something to say about the Anna's movement. Well, rest 50 never log on to their FB account. Everybody has something to share. People are so excited, that they actually start putting poems written by Ram Prasad Bismil on their FB page. Its' a different fact that they got to know about that poem through Rang De Basanti only. Thousands of people march with Anna on the roads of New Delhi and thousands across all major cities in India. People holding placards with the picture of Mahatma himself (Just to remind the government, who was real Gandhi) and shouting patriotic slogans is being shown live. And it is so amusing for young guys in their twenties that my rest 50 friends especially log on to FB to say something about the whole issue.
]]>News channels, who had been so bored showing the cleavage line of dumb bollywood strugglers, take no time in coining a new term for all this movement "Second Freedom Struggle".
But is it really so? And do people like Anna even deserve our support?
The whole world remembers what happened on 26/11 in Mumbai. We all saw and cried for our beloved city. For the next few weeks it seemed that the whole nation was united and saying the same thing to the government "Enough is enough. Nobody can come down to our beloved city, kill people while politicians keep roaming around with their flop actor sons and bollywood producers". The movement was strong enough to roll some big heads in the government. We all remember that.
What we don't remember that, six months after that incident, there was a general election in the country including the same Mumbai. Coincidently, election combined with the weekend made it a long weekend. And guess what, half of the town was away in Sahyadri hills enjoying their private times away from the city hassles, while their representatives were being chosen by their maids and servants. Once, these guys came back from their honeymoon, they started complaining again that their representatives were just not bothered about them.
More I think about it, more I get confused about it.
Let's say you are a businessman, and you pay protection money to some local gangsters, just to make sure that you remain safe and gangsters from neighborhoods don't create any problems for you. The leader of the gang is chosen by their members and they divide the money among themselves by their own formula.
Now, suddenly one day you come to know that that one member of the gang was cheating on the gang by not reporting the actual collection from some neighborhood shop. Do you have any right to complain about the whole thing of the breach of trust by the gang members?
Governments are no different from such gangs. They take protection money from us better known as Taxes, and promise us to protect us from gangs from other areas better known as adversary nations, and they also promise us to make our life comfortable by providing us the conditions of safe living. The only difference here in the case of democracy is that we have the right to choose the gang who will collect money from us. So, all the gangs have the incentive to be nice to us, otherwise we will not choose them, and they would loose out. What a magnificent idea in the field of sociology.
But, does it really happen.
Our generation, who is busy posting Ram Prasad Bismil's poem on the Facebook as their contribution in this fight against corruption can easily be spotted in some house party a night before elections. Reason being, it's always a dry day before elections. So, we can't go to disc to celebrate the unplanned holiday, and we gather at a friend's place, drink beer, dance with good looking girls and wake up late the next morning, just to watch our maids and local panwaalah standing in the queue to vote on TV.
"I so much wanted to vote this time, but it's a bad hangover from last night. I can't stand in the queue behind by maid for 2 hours in this scorching Sun. She stinks badly."
"What about the choosing the government", I wonder.
"Well, India has more than 700 million electorate, what difference my one vote would make dude."
"And if the government becomes corrupt?"
"There is always Facebook."
Consider a case where you are an independent director on the board of a company. You choose not to attend a board meeting, and in that meeting the board pass a resolution to overlook a fishy case of violation of ethical conduct. Do you have any right to complain after that? Or, would you go on the facebook and post a comment about how badly the company is run.
You are the one, who is supposed to choose the management committee. If you can't perform your duty, what gives you the right to complain?
Similarly, in a democracy, we are the one, who is supposed to choose the government. If the government is bad, it simply means that we are not doing out duty earnestly. What gives us the right to complain about the elected members of the parliament, when we were busy exploring the fun side of life on the date of election.
Its' true that when people are frustrated, government must listen. And if it doesn't, it simply means that revolution is around the corner.
But it will not happen in this case. India is growing at a healthy pace. Economic prosperity is such a thing, which can be traded for even personal liberty by people. China is a shinning example of this. As long as most of the people are earning money and can see bright future for their children, they don't want to disturb the delicate balance of the socio-economy-polity tripad of the country. As long as more and more people in India would be opening their FB accounts, our frustration would remain on Facebook pages only.
Its' true that revolutions have always been brought with the help of the youth only. But unless and until the youth is pushed to the wall, and unless and until it has a leader to show him the path, the energy of youth is waste. In our case, it would remain on our FB pages only.
I sometimes wonder that an old man, who has the courage to stand against the whole system, does need our support? Does a person, with Gandhian way of protest, really need the support of people like us who feel ashamed to step out of their comfort zone for anything?
Does Anna Hazare deserve our support?
Well, we don't deserve to support him.
If we really want to contribute anything in this movement against corruption, we must paste this on our FB pages, and follow it both in letter and spirit:
I pledge that I would wake up at 6 in the morning and would be the first person to reach the voting counter in every election in my area. Only after, I would have performed my duties assigned to me by my nation, I would have the rights to stand up for my rights.
